OUR PEOPLE

DR ANDREW ASHERSON

CARDIOLOGIST 

MBChB (Stell), FRCP (London), FESC.

Dr Asherson is Durban born and bred. He matriculated from Hilton College in 1992 and completed his undergraduate medical training at Stellenbosch University in 1998. After an internship at Groote Schuur Hospital, and subsequent community service in Hanover Park and Mannenberg, Andrew moved to London where he attained the MRCP (UK) diploma in 2004. Dr Asherson completed his senior house officer and specialist training in General Medicine and Cardiology in 2012, working in and around London including at the tertiary teaching units of St. Mary’s Hospital, Harefield Heart Hospital and St. George’s Hospital. He is dual accredited as both a Specialist Physician and Cardiologist with both the Health Professions Council of SA and the General Medical Council (UK). He has worked exclusively at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital since January 2015, and manages most aspects of adult cardiology, with particular interests in transradial coronary angiography and intervention, cardiac pacing, Dobutamine stress echocardiography, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, and most recently, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI), having started the TAVI programme at Gateway Hospital in 2019. He is a past co-opted committee member of the Heart Failure Society of SA (HeFSSA), past secretary of the KZN Branch of the SA Heart Association and current member of the SA Heart Private Practice Committee.  He has a research interest, having published both first and co-authored case reports, articles, and a Heart editorial, and having spent two years researching echo predictors of response to cardiac resynchronisation therapy in the UK.  He has since enrolled many of his patients in stent and device registries. Dr Asherson was conferred Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in December 2018 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) in January 2020.

NICOLA ASHERSON

PRACTICE MANAGER

 

Nikki is originally from Durban and qualified as a Dietitian from Stellenbosch University in 1998. She worked at Tygerberg hospital in the Cape, and in St Mary’s Hospital in London. She then moved into Medical Industry where she worked in sales at Abbott Laboratories in Cape Town and in the marketing and training departments at Bausch and Lomb in London. Nikki is happy to assist in any aspect of the business including any billing queries.

MISHQAH IDREES

ADMINISTRATION 

Mishqah has many years of experience in Cardiology practices. Mishqah is responsible for the administration side of the practice, from chronic medication applications, to PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefit) registration, and the completion of insurance documents. Mishqah also assists at the reception desk and in the fitting of monitors, and Exercise Treadmill Testing.

PHIA KERNICK

CARDIAC NURSE

 

Phia is originally from Pietermaritzburg and worked at Mediclinic Hospital where she completed her Bridging course and obtained her Diploma as a Registered Nurse. She qualified in 2019 and worked in the surgical ward gaining experience with surgical cases, wound care management and other aspects of patient care. Her main goal as a nurse is to help people and she enjoys seeing her patients improve. She has joined Dr Asherson’s practice in order to assist him with the clinical aspects of the practice, including ward liaison, scripting and patient communication.

TASHMIKA VASDEV

CLINICAL TECHNOLOGIST

 

Tashmika is originally from Durban.  She graduated from the Durban University of Technology and completed her Cardiac Technology training at Inkosi Albert  Luthuli Central Hospital in 2016.

​

She has worked at many busy practices across Durban and Pietermaritzburg, acquiring cardiac knowledge and experience. 

​

Tash's role includes conducting resting ECGs, Exercise Stress Testing, Echocardiograms, Pacemaker Programming and Checks, Holter and Blood Pressure Monitoring as well as Cathlab Monitoring. She looks forward to having a look into your heart at your next visit!

JANLYN FOURIE

RECEPTION 

 

Janlyn is responsible for telephone reception and appointment bookings and will be your first point of contact at ACI. Janlyn has extensive experience in reception and administration positions, including 4 years in a dentist’s rooms. Janlyn will be able to assist with the forwarding of results and reports. Janlyn is fluent in both English and Afrikaans.
